Paul Thurrott has the scoop on one of the most crucial features included in Windows 7: the new resource monitor.

One of the coolest new features in Windows Vista is the Performance Monitor. In a similar vein, one of the coolest new features in Windows 7 is the revamped Resource Monitor. Here’s what it looks like:

Note the gray part of the bar. That’s how much RAM you lose by using a 32-bit version of Windows with 4 GB of RAM. Yes, really. (With x64, it’s a tiny sliver.)

Apple blocks Opera Mobile on iPhone PDF Print E-mail

It would be nice to have a choice of browsers on the iPhone.  I am hoping ant least Firefox gets a shot at it.

Apple's success with the iPhone hasn't seemed to dampen its enthusiasm from keeping all other companies away from its precious device, as it has apparently rejected the Opera browser from its App Store.

Opera CEO Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner told the NY Times in a recent interview that Opera's engineers have developed a browser capable of running on the iPhone, but Apple won't let the App be released as it competes with Safari Mobile.

Windows 7 Taskbar

While we haven't yet gotten our hands on a Windows 7 build with the new taskbar, we did talk to Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky about the various UI changes and what we can expect at release time.

It's not a surprise that the most disruptive Windows UI change in 15 years comes under the watch of the man largely responsible for the Office ribbon. The ribbon was a jarring change for many users, yet there was no option to turn it off, which made sense to most of us here at Ars. Many people vehemently disagreed with this decision, and we expect to be hearing from them again on the new taskbar. Sinofsky told us that there will be no ability to enable the old taskbar since, in Microsoft's opinion, the new taskbar's leap in usability negates the need for a "less-able" option. While there's not quite as much ingrained taskbar knowledge as there may have been for the various Office toolbars and menus, we expect that this change will be the source of lots of contention.
